THE FADER MAGAZINE

Current Issue #55

There's so much in our summer music issue that we can barely contain it all. From Estelle's breezy pop to Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson's depressed anthems, to Crookers' out of control Italian raves. From the new cumbia of Buenos Aires to the next crop of NYC hitmakers Sean C & LV and Ryan Leslie to Abe Vigoda's LA melancholy—it's all in between our glossy covers. That's not even mentioning our stellar Gen F lineup and all the other stuff packed into the mag that is going to make our summers.

    Stylee Fridays: Mjolk at Capsule

It's always tough to pick favorites at Capsule, just because this particular menswear tradeshow is already a big favorite of ours in itself. As we browsed the clothing racks and neatly stacked piles of button-downs and brogues, it didn't take long to figure out that the Scandinavians had clinched it again. From the geometric covered booties we saw at Stockholm-based footwear line Gram to the black rose printed shirts at Gothenburg-based Velour, all roads seemed to be leading north. Mjolk is actually a menswear line out of London, but Lars, the founder and designer is from Denmark (Mjolk is Danish for "milk"). He's lived in the UK for 14 years so his accent has a London wideboy twang to it with a tiny Nordic lilt. He moved to New York a couple of months ago and we were lucky enough to bump into him at the Mjolk booth (the sales people were having a cigarette break). Lars is really the ultimate posterboy for the line. He wears the cropped sweat-meet-dress pants in a way that makes you want to jump into your own pair and give this new take on casual dress-up a go yourself. It's a good combination of that Scandinavian style we've been banging on about, chopped with a good helping of London eccentricity. The idea for Spring '09 (yes, '09 mind-blowing we know!) was to take the formal out of men's formal wear, so lots of the blazers were amazingly casual with matching pants made from sweatshirt material. It was all we could do not to swipe a pair of Spring '09 shorts while Lars wasn't looking, but honestly the collection is one worth sitting tight for—one we will still be psyched about when it finally hits stores next spring. more...

  • Audio: Hollow Stars = Colin Mee

    Hollowstars_main
Colin Mee, former guitarist for Deerhunter, has recently begun his own project, Hollow Stars, and has put up some homemade tracks on their MySpace page. Check "Selffufillingprophecy," the intro is a sidewinder. But someone help him get in the studio, the bedroom echo is a little janky. But potential abounds! Hollow Stars are apparently playing a show two weeks ago if you're in the Atlanta neighborhood.

  • Contest: Win Tickets To See Sebastien Tellier

    Tellier_main
Sebastien Tellier, the man behind the outer space sex jams that inspired us to grow our hair and beards out and drink whiskey during heatwaves is finally coming to us. Tellier will be hitting Los Angeles, New York, Montreal and Toronto, for specifics on where, get the full info after the jump and then spend the remaining time trying to figure out how you feel about the above image (answer: you feel curious about it and then feel that it is awesome.) Of course, we understand that not everyone lives in Canada or on either end of the United States, and if that's the case, stay tuned to thefader.com for exclusive tour diarying from Tellier as he plays private shows in an American Apparel and public shows everywhere else. Not enough for you? Email us at contests@thefader.com with your full name to win some tickets to the show of your choice. more...

  • FADER TV: Shop Talk — Blue In Green

After impersonating our favorite style icons (Monday=Francoise Hardy day, Tuesday=Bianca Jagger day, etc etc), our favorite pastime in the style department is probably shopping. But shopping is a lot more fun when you have a shop expert to help navigate the shelves/racks. Luckily our favorite stores are filled with lots of such specialists, all of whom know their German deadstock from their North American vintage. For the first installment of Shop Talk we paid SoHo menswear store Blue in Green a visit, to get a very important lesson in twelve thousand dollar Japanese selvedge.

  • Freeload: Avalon, "Avalonian's Shrine"

    Avalon_main
We picked Avalon's 4 Gospels For 2 Testaments off the recycle pile solely on the strength of it being the only new Japanese promo we've gotten in a long ass time and we felt we owed them at least a listen for their shipping expenses. One of Avalon's members also wears a blonde wig on his face on the back photo which is also always a plus. It turns out such simple reductions can occasionally lead to good music. "Avalonian's Shrine" is the lead-off song on the album and reminds us a little bit of the lighter Justice times combined with the high-NRG of Sweden's Slagsmålsklubben. It's also just kind of fun for a Friday afternoon to find out about a group of Tokyo dudes who jam like this. Pick up their EP at their MySpace.

  • Freeload: Teedra Moses, "So Kool"

    Teedra_main
Considering that we are suckers for both Teedra Moses and double-time R&B, posting ol' girl's new single was a no-brainer. The caffeinated hi-hats of "So Kool" sound like recent efforts from J*Davey and Janelle Monet if they swapped the rock chick vibes for quadruple-coat studio gloss - and this is not necessarily a bad thing (the Pointer Sisters are awesome!). It's been four years since TM's last LP, so we can only hope there's more unexpected jams on the way.

  • American Teens No Longer Teens!

    Americanteenposter2_main
Last night, we went to the New York premiere of American Teen, the Nanette Burstein movie about several Indiana high school seniors that would be a horror film if it weren't a documentary. A couple times we had to pull our purse over our face, because we remembered how desperately we wanted to escape our crappy hometown when we were 17 (where everyone thought we were total freakazoids cause we wore plastic lizards in our hair and smoked cloves), so we could move to New York and wear berets and become artistes. Luckily it was a happy ending for us (here is a photo of us now). Even more luckily it was a happy ending for the star of the film, the ever-endearing, strong and punky artist chick Hannah, who was far too cool for her hometown (Warsaw, Indiana) and so smart and awesome we desperately wanted her to make her way out and thrive. And LO! She did, and was at the premiere last night, along with the rest of the stars. It was a bit like Luke Perry-era 90210 though, where you expect people to be one age (high school) and in fact they are 47 because so much time has passed between the filming of the movie and now. But no one had wrinkles, and Hannah was wearing a fabulous high-waisted pencil skirt and tuxedo shirt and got her haircut into a pixie and was dancing cutely and unhingedly to M.I.A. We are totally facebook friending her. It's a horror film with a happy ending! American Teen opens today and you should go see it because it's super sweet and engaging, and completely avoids any corny reality show tropes whatsoever, and the kids say funny shit like "so many girls would give up their left boob" to go out with the super hot secretly nerdy jock dude. Omigod ok bye we are going to write our best friend a note.

  • Audio: Morgan Geist f. Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys), "Most of All"

    Morgangeist_main
This song was originally released as the A-side of a 12" on Morgan Geist's Environ label two years ago, but we've just been given it in advance of Geist's forthcoming album Double Night Time, which has been in steady rotation since we got it. It's his first album in nearly a decade, after some time focusing on Metro Area with Darshan Jesrani, and along with that 12"s B-side, "Skyblue Pink", the album is full of super poppy, almost r&b-ish lite jams that, if we did this kind of thing, would be perfect for sipping froo-froos in an infinity pool somewhere really expensive. Or you can just rock it while you soak your buns in a puddle. It's an album that spans the divide between New York's two classes: Ballers Out of Control and Everyone Else. It comes out in October, but you can catch Geist and his Environ bros maxing at PS 1 in Queens in a few weeks if you can't wait that long.

  • Exclusive Stream/Q+A: Doctor Delay's Eastern Block Party

    Delay_main
Over here at FADER it's been established that we're a bunch of long hairs (mostly in spirit) who spend our days listening to Outkast behind beaded curtains, or lay on straw mats while jamming The Tough Alliance. Some days we also just listen to Animal Collective bootlegs all day. What we're saying is we like a lot of stuff, so Dr. Delay's mixes are generally right up our alley, especially when our alley has lately been Mixes Of Music We Have Never Heard And Won't Ever See In A Store. We're curious! Delay's new CD mixes bar rock from Communist era Eastern Europe with underutilized '80s rap acapellas (and also Bonecrusher), and it's real heady and swirly and puts us in a slouchy, sweaty mood—in a good way. The mix is out soon, and you can purchase it here or at Turntable Lab in the coming weeks. Can't wait? Stream the entire mix below, and while you're doing it read our Q+A with Delay about Eastern Block Party, Polish rock finds in Greenpoint, and his love of the oft-misconstrued psych genre.

  • A Fond Farewell To FADER Japan

    Fj11_main
We've been huddled around the final issue of FADER Japan, which has brought us entertainment in ways that only an issue of The FADER (from anywhere) can bring us. Sometimes it may have been confusing, yes, but mostly we were happy to see our writing appear in Japanese and also see what they were into over there. (Answer: Alife! Lots of DJ Krush!) FADER Japan, we enjoyed reading you as best we could, and we're bummed we never got to hang out in your office.

  • Freeload: Friendly Fires, "Jump In The Pool"

    Friendlyfires_main
FADER HQ has been en fuego with Friendly Fires paraphernalia for at least eight and a half days. Said paraphernalia includes: foppish hair, shoegazy guitars where it counts, dance rhythms, and hooks on the chorus that have made us IM everyone from extended family members to our seventh grade exes about how awesome we feel, so FACE. It's like huffing whippets without the brain damage or genetically mutated future babies and WITH all the mind-pancaking euphoria, CAN U DIG it! This track is a firetruck entourage of cowbell and disco-whistles, while vocalist Ed MacFarlane encourages someone to "jump in the pool," which is probably a metaphor about falling in love. There are 61 more days left in summer, so you better act now. Also, they're on tour in the US.

  • Teaser: Sigur Ros At MoMA On Current

    Sigurcurrent_main
We missed Sigur Ros' show at MoMA last month, but we weren't that bummed about it because we knew Current would be there recording the whole thing. They just put up a short teaser, but it does get us excited to watch the full show on Current on August 5th at 10pm EST (you can watch it online as well). And the added bonus is that we will be able to watch it as it was meant to be watched— on a tiny black and white Sony Watchman with a fork jammed in the antenna hole. Epicness.

  • FADER TV: Avoiding Disease At The Yard

A couple weeks ago Brooklyn fairy godfather Todd P organized a massive mid-summer party at The Yard, a lovely greenspace on the shores of the gonorrheic Gowanus Canal (Oh shit! Gowanorrhea!), with performances by many FADER favorites such as Oneida, High Places, Shy Child, Crystal Antlers, Ponytail, Telepathe, Vivian Girls, Abe Vigoda, Soft Circle, Soiled Mattress and the Springs and Chairlift. We asked Todd if we could bring our video camera, and of course he said yes. We edited the nine or so hours down to several easily-digested minutes with performances by Ponytail, Crystal Antlers, Vivian Girls, Telepathe and Shy Child. Catch the virulent experience only on FADER TV.

  • Style: The Return Of Surf

    Surf1_main
For the FADER summer music issue we got deep into vintage surf, embracing our sandy roots with the same enthusiasm that Jeff Spicoli embraced pepperoni pizza. This last week at the Capsule tradeshow we revisited surf wear for spring season 2009, checking in with vintage surf line, Maui and Sons. The surf godfathers have released more dead stock awesomeness with old skool shark prints and flashy block colors, reminding us that thigh high swim trunks are just fine. Just fine indeed. Despite all of the amazing prints, one of our favorite pieces happened to be the bold printed Maui and Sons canvas pack, indulging our backpack fetish and summery beach bum attitude. At another booth we even stumbled upon these incredible issues of 80’s surf culture magazine, WET, confirming that we do indeed owe ourselves a big congratulatory slap on the back for trendspotting. More looks after the jump. more...

Yes! The songs-with-the-same-word-in-their-title DJ blend is back like it never left! Canadian turntablist Skratch Bastid (check his 2003 Justin Timberlake routine) turned his wicky wickies towards the accapella from Yeezy's "Workout Plan" and placed it over FADER favorite Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor's Workout Riddim, and we can't think of a better Thursday morning kickoff.
