Selah Sue Attempts To Exorcise Sadness In Heavy “Reason” Video
The Belgian star’s Reason is out June 3.
Already quite established in Europe, Belgian singer Selah Sue will attempt to find similar footing on this side of the Atlantic this summer with the release of a new album, Reason, on June 3.
In anticipation of its release, today Sue has shared a stirring video for Reason's title-track, a sort of smoky, slinky self-empowerment anthem. Directed by Tim Erem (whose name you might recognize for his work with Rihanna and Major Lazer), it spotlights characters in various straitened circumstances from around the world and their search for—as the song goes—their reason to hold on. Reason, look at her/ And tell her what to do, Sue wails, her voice smoky—or perhaps strained by her desire to exorcise their sadness. So she can come back to life and won't feel sad no more.
"In times of sadness, strong negative emotions, I'll call out to my sense of Reason," Sue wrote in a note to The FADER about the beautiful, heart-gripping video. "It tells me to hold on and assures me it will get better in time. Because it always does. This song is written to myself and everyone else feeling hopeless sometimes. Reason, look at them and tell ‘em what to do!"
