Cellphone’s “I’m Gonna Live” Is Thrash-Punk Positive Mental Attitude
Growling riffs and fanged howls are your new mantras.
An honest reflection on your perception's blind spots is a great method of self care. “I'm Gonna Live,” the new single from Cellphone, channels this mental exercise with a sound that goes great with a morning beer.
Following their 2014 LP Excellent Condition, the Toronto band's latest track loses the synths and leans on burly guitar pyrotechnics and foreboding, scratchy-throated vocals. Existential thought and metal have always been partners, and “I'm Gonna Live” is a blast from the Heavy Metal Parking Lot and wood-panelled basement practice. The band's Mike Worth-Broff clued us in on the ideas at work:
“I'm Gonna Live” dissects the idea of what reality is. Your understanding of what is real or absolute is a constantly shifting cycle that's manipulated by personal bias. This song is about making peace with that reality.
