Daryl Hall Is Cool With The xx Sampling Hall & Oates For “On Hold”

“Have fun and pay me.”

November 10, 2016

The xx debuted "On Hold," the lead single from their first album in five years, I See You, early Thursday. The song is a trademark Romy-Oliver duet about a crumbling relationship, anchored by a slowed-down vocal sample from Hall & Oates' timeless "I Can't Go For That."

To celebrate the release of the song, Genius reached out to Daryl Hall to get his take on the record. Hall's response was pretty fair minded, albeit with one caveat:

“It’s always interesting to hear what somebody does with my songs,” Hall said. “After a song is written, it belongs to the world and can be interpreted anyway they want. As long as I get paid, of course. Have fun and pay me.”

Listen to the original, which has been sampled and interpolated by everybody from De La Soul to Mac Dre, below. The xx's I See You is due out January 13.
