Ariana Grande: “Expressing Sexuality In Art Is Not An Invitation For Disrespect”
The pop star took to Twitter to speak from personal experience on sexism and objectification.
Ariana Grande took to Twitter yesterday to share some thoughts about sexism and objectification. The note begins by telling a story about an outing with Miller during which a male fan congratulated the rapper on "hitting that," referring to her.
"I felt sick and objectified," said Grande. "Things like [that] happen all the time and are the kinds of moments that contribute to women's sense of fear and inadequacy." She added that she felt sharing her experience was important because, "We need to talk about these moments openly because they are harmful and live inside of us as shame."
Today, Grande hopped on Twitter again to respond to some of the backlash she's received after voicing her frustration last night. "Seeing a lot of 'but look how you portray yourself in videos and in your music,'" Grande tweeted. Responding to those criticisms, she said, "Expressing sexuality in art is not an invitation for disrespect! Just like wearing a short skirt is not asking for assault."
In a subsequent tweet, she continued: "You are literally saying that if we look a certain way, we are yours to take. But we are not! It's our right to express ourselves." Read the full string of tweets below.
