Solange On The Grammys: “Create Your Own Committees, Build Your Own Institutions”
“Be the gold you wanna hold my g’s.”
Beyoncé owned the night with her stunning performance at The Grammys on Sunday, where she was nominated for a total of nine awards. But, at the end of the night, the pop star, and her groundbreaking visual album Lemonade, had only received two awards, prompting outrage from fans and artists alike.
Solange Knowles, who won an award during the pre-telecast for Best R&B Performance, took to Twitter after the awards show to share a link to a statement Frank Ocean wrote on his Tumblr over the weekend. In the statement, Ocean explained why he had not submitted his album to the Recording Academy for consideration, citing the Album of the Year win by Taylor Swift's 1989 over Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly an example of "THE CULTURAL BIAS AND GENERAL NERVE DAMAGE THE SHOW YOU PRODUCE SUFFERS FROM."
Solange expanded on her thoughts on The Grammys on Monday, pointing to the fact that only two black artists have won Album of the Year in the last 20 years, while over 200 black artists have performed at The Grammys. "Create your own committees, build your own institutions, give your friends awards, award yourself, and be the gold you wanna hold my g's," she wrote.
