Each year at the beginning of spring, couples around the world begin to notice the glaring flaws in their relationships as the snow melts and people start looking sexy again. Toronto pop-punk band Pony's new song "Alone Tonight" is the perfect soundtrack for this kind of interpersonal strife. The song is syrupy without being too keen, and has a creeping feeling of impending loss spread across its verses that's balanced out by a liberated, peppy hook. "You can't make all the rules, you can't play me like a fool," the band's singer/guitarist Sam Bielanski chirps, summarizing why the trauma of a breakup can be worth it for the ensuing clarity.

"I wrote 'Alone Tonight' when I was in a super codependent/comfortable relationship," Bielanski told The FADER over email. "We would literally do the exact same thing every day, which included watching 5 or 6 episodes of Dragons Den on Netflix. I realized that we had absolutely nothing to talk about anymore and we just watched TV all the time to kind of hide the fact that maybe we weren't 'meant to be.' It's very much about how in the end I realized being alone, as scary as it was at the time, was way better than settling for someone who I basically just watched TV with."

Pony's "Alone Tonight / DIY" 7" is out May 12 on Buzz Records.
