“Beba’s Song” Is A New Film’s Love Letter To Black Life
The original song by New York’s Rebeca Huntt, GODBODYWATI, Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez, and more braces us for BEBA.
Part documentary, part memoir, the upstart film BEBA takes place in Uptown New York and follows an Afro-Latina woman on her path to self-discovery and survival. Now two years into its creative development, the creators are eyeing a 2018 release date if they can get the funding they need via Kickstarter. Brooklyn artists like GODBODYWATI, Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez, Ezrakh, and Kashaka have come together to support the film with "Beba's Song," a track that packs potent messages and draws a breathtaking portrait of the crew and community around the film.
"We decided the best way to let [our] communities know this film is being made is to make an original song and music video that speaks to them," the film's co-director Rebeca Huntt told The FADER in an email. "This our way of letting the community know, 'Yo, this documentary film is about to drop and it's made for us, by us.'"
Over email GODBODYWATI said that putting the song together was very important for him. "I got to shed light on the struggles and triumphs that come with being a young black woman/black man," he said. "To be black in America, let alone in the world means to constantly balance on a psychological tightrope, and we got the chance to shed a light on that."
