U.K. Election Ends In Hung Parliament, Conservatives Lose Majority
Jeremy Corbyn has called for Theresa May’s resignation.
The majority of results in the U.K.'s general election have come in, and neither prime minister Theresa May's Conservatives or Jeremy Corbyn's Labour party can achieve a majority in Parliament. The country now has a hung parliament.
A party needs 326 seats are necessary to secure a majority. The Conservatives are still the largest party, but they lost several seats in the snap election.
As of 6:09 U.K. time, the Conservatives had 308 seats and Labour had 259, with 14 seats left to be declared.
The Labour party performed much better than expected, gaining dozens of seats in parliament. At around 4 a.m. U.K. time, Buzzfeed reported that a new exit poll projected the Conservatives to only get 318 seats. They previously held a majority of 17.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Islington North, has called for prime minister Theresa May to resign following the results of the election.
"The prime minister called this election because she wanted a mandate. Well the mandate she's got is lost Conservative seats, lost votes, lost support and lost confidence," Corbyn said. "I would have thought that's enough to go, actually, and make way for a government that will be truly representative of all of the people of this country."
The results of the election are a big upset for the Conservative party. May called this snap election in April in an attempt to strengthen the Conservative majority and deliver a mandate on Brexit.
