Protesters In Durham Hand Themselves Over To Authorities In Solidarity With Takiyah Thompson
Arrests reportedly made as crowds gather outside local sheriffs office.
A large crowd of protesters gathered outside a sheriffs office in Durham, North Carolina on Thursday morning in an attempt to get the charges against Takiyah Thompson dropped. Thompson was arrested on Tuesday for tearing down a confederate monument in North Carolina in solidarity with Charlottesville.
Tweets from those on the ground show a large group of protesters chanting "We are the people coming for justice. We are the small axe, coming to cut you." A tweet from one of the protesters suggests at least three members of the group have been arrested since the mass hand-in began. The protest appears to being led by Lamont Lilly, an activist and resident of Durham.
