Report: Mayor Bill de Blasio To Support Repeal Of N.Y.C.’s Racist “No-Dancing” Law
The Prohibition-era law will soon be gone.
According to New York Daily News, Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration will support the repeal of New York City's Cabaret Law. The outdated piece of legislation enforces venues to obtain a Cabaret License in order to permit dancing in the premises. Without the license, dancing in thousands of establishments in the city is technically illegal. Senior adviser Lindsay Greene officially announced that de Blasio's administration "strongly supports" the termination of the bill in a hearing.
"We feel there are better ways than the current cabaret law to create a strong and healthy nightlife economy while also ensuring the safety and security of everyone participating in that economy," she said. "Repealing the cabaret law while maintaining important safety provisions will go a long way to ensuring New Yorkers can fully enjoy the city's vast array of nightlife venues."
Last month, the New York City council passed a bill to create an Office of Nightlife.
