Gun Outfit debuts “Landscape Painter,” another intoxicating psych ballad
It’s off the band’s forthcoming fifth album, Out of Range.
Thankfully we rarely have to wait too long for new tunes from Gun Outfit, the reliably great California band behind some of the decade's coolest classic-feeling psych folk. Their fifth full-length, Out of Range, is due this fall, and latest single "Landscape Painter" is debuting here today.
True to form, the song finds Dylan Sharp and Carrie Keith trading lines of metaphysical poetry over hypnotic guitar runs. "I’m out here in the landscape / Looking for a theme / Understood and overwhelmed by / These softly fading beams," they sing at one point, their words a sort of tribute to that feeling of staring at a painting or photograph for so long that the world actually starts to slip away around you.
"'Landscape Painter' is the old story of color and texture overwhelming human concerns," Sharp explained in an email. "It's a song about humility in the face of the natural world and the struggle to draw inspiration from emptiness. It's just another naive rendering of a gentle breeze." Listen/watch below.
