MSC Jay provides a look at life on South Carolina’s St. Helena Island with his “Mah Dawg” video
The South Carolina rapper’s Geechie Gospel EP is out January 5.
South Carolina's St. Helena Island is known for its rich cultural history. The 64-square-mile piece of land off the coast is the main epicenter of the Gullah/Geechie people, a distinct American culture with its own language and traditions that dates back to West Africans being brought to this country as slaves.
In the video for "Mah Dawg," the lead single from his upcoming Geechie Gospel EP which premieres on The FADER today, MSC Jay provides a look at life on St. Helena Island through the black-and-white visual. Over a twinkling beat, Jay raps about his loved ones and uses the repeated "Mah Dawg" refrain as a rhythmic device.
"This song and this video is dedicated to all my dawgs, the ones present and the ones who ain't able to be here wit me today," MSC Jay told The FADER over email. Watch the video for "Mah Dawg" above and watch MSC Jay's Dirt Road Diaries documentary below.
