Kendrick Lamar has won a Pulitzer Prize
For his 2017 album DAMN.
The winners of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize have been announced, with the Pulitzer Prize in music going to Kendrick Lamar for his 2017 album DAMN. It's the first hip-hop album in history to win the award. Past recipients include Steve Reich, Julia Wolfe, and Zhou Long.
The Pulitzer Prize website calls DAMN. "a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life."
This month, DAMN. became Lamar's third album to sell over a million copies. In February, Lamar and his label Top Dawg Entertainment shared the soundtrack for the film Black Panther.
