Take an offbeat tour of Oxnard in Cola Boyy’s “Penny Girl” video

If the music game doesn't work out for Cola Boyy then he'll have a job working for his local tourism board. The 28-year-old California native's debut video, premiering above, is a love letter to all of his favorite places and people in the seaside town of Oxnard. The visual starts in Cola Boyy's messy bedroom before hitting the streets to capture vintage cars, karate-loving teens, a rocky beach, and lots else inbetween. Neighborhood spirit lights up each shot while "Penny Girl"'s soulful disco groove, think a DIY take on Chromeo, adds to the charm.

The sense of community captured by director David Luraschi isn't just for show. Outside of making music Cola Boyy is an active member of the Todo Poder Al Pueblo collective, a small far-left group that fights for immigrants’ rights in a city that is 80% Hispanic. He’s also a member of APOC, organizing all-ages punk concerts and fundraisers for underprivileged children.

Speaking to The FADER via email, Cola Boyy said of the video: "This is not just my world, but a part of me that's so vulnerable. All my differences are on the table, and my song plays in the background. Oxnard has so many bright colors and faces, it shows in the video. Isn't it nice?"

Cola Boyy's debut EP Black Boogie Neon is due on September 21. An album will follow in 2019.
