lemin finds perspective in the R&B slow-burner “View of it All”
The Toronto artist’s hold A: Act 2 EP is out September 21.
Toronto R&B singer and producer Lemin has named her EP series Hold A after Nintendo controllers, and the melody for her new song "View of it All" might give you flashbacks to the soundtrack for Goldeneye 64. The strongest vibe, though, is the sense of self-worth giving the song a boost beneath its chilly, trip-hop-meets-Sade atmosphere.
"The entire hold A project is kind of a break up album, but more so it’s an album of self-acceptance and personal growth," lemin said in an email. "It starts off sad and depressed after losing someone, turns to anger and resentment for the pain it caused, and finally acceptance. I talk a lot about Mario Kart in my music because, well first of all I love Mario Kart, but secondly I like the analogy of accelerating into who are. 'View of it All' is from the angry portion, but its actually not written about an ex. It’s a song for the trolls out there who live online, criticizing other peoples' art. When I put up music on SoundCloud before, it was picked up by some big Toronto blogs and there were some trolls who basically said I shouldn’t be making this music, that it was, and I am boring. I want to make a mark on the industry with the type of music I produce. I make music thats familiar enough to resonate, but unique enough to make an impact. I’m trying to create something new so I don’t get lost in the View of it All."
