Head back to summer camp with Wild Black’s “Moon Star Lover”

Toronto-based artist Wild Black is holding onto the long-chilled memories of summer with the camp-themed visuals for the single "Moon Star Lover." The funk-laden track is smooth, and its guitar-heavy production the perfect backdrop for Wild Black's airy vocals.

The clip, directed by Lulu Wei, was meant to "subvert the idea of summer camp and create a camp that is diverse- celebrating our uniqueness, our queerness, our varying shades of melanin – reflect the camp we would’ve wanted to attend." The clip finds Wild Black surrounded by a truly diverse crew of friends, enjoying the spoils of a youthful day in the sun and under the stars.

The making of the song and video also proved to be a particular personal process for the artist. "I wrote 'Moon Star Lover' during a time of serious transition and I wanted to transform my journey and the honesty I was ready to express into something beautiful and fun that celebrates and focuses on queer femme and non-binary folks of color," the singer explained about the project in a statement. "Coming out is one of the hardest things that someone can do for many different reasons. For me, it created some inner conflict and tension, especially as the daughter of a Muslim Ethiopian immigrant. It has been a bittersweet and very slow process, but making this song and this video served as a therapeutic catalyst for my self-expression, and self-love."
