Watch Dreamer Boy’s spaced-out “Puppy Dog” video
In advance of Zach Taylor’s upcoming second full-length.
Twenty-four-year-old Zach Taylor, who writes and records as Dreamer Boy, had a breakout moment last year, capitalizing on the streaming success of his woozy 2018 debut Love, Nostalgia by hitting the road with FADER Label's Clairo and rising Gen F star Omar Apollo. This morning, he's setting himself up for 2020 with a video for his latest single, "Puppy Dog," in advance of an as-yet-untitled but apparently almost finished follow-up LP. Directed by Taylor himself, the video has the singer rolling around with a pack of masked human-dogs — like a less menacing, Polaroid-hued remake of Bat For Lashes' "What's a Girl To Do."
“Puppy Dog is a moment in time for me," Taylor told The FADER in an email. "I opened every show of the Clairo tour with it, and the release came right in the middle of my first project and my second. I wanted this song and now the video we’ve made to be a world of its own. I want this portrayal of Dreamer Boy to feel like a specific character unique to this song. Everything from the wardrobe, props and extras were intentional in building that recognition. I was inspired by '90s fisheye videos and Wes Anderson’s trademark character/wardrobe design. The masks were the first idea and everything started to make sense from there. This was such a fun video to make with my best friends playing the supporting roles of the extras and my right hand creative partner Adam shooting it.”
