Sam Smith has confirmed details of their third album. To Die For is out on May 1 and is preceded by the album's title track, a video for which can be seen below. "To Die For" is an Autotune-flecked ballad that opens with a sample from Jake Gyllenhaal's 2001 movie Donnie Darko.
Smith, who publicly changed their pronouns to they/them in 2019, teamed up with Grant Singer (The Weeknd, Lorde) on the "To Die For" video. Shot outside a Los Angeles wig shop, the video shows Smith as a mannequin.
Writing about their new album on Instagram, Smith said: "I am more proud of this album than anything I’ve ever done. I’ve really set myself free the last two years whilst writing this and I hope you can dance and relate to these stories."
Smith's last album was 2017's The Thrill Of It All. Their debut In The Lonely Hour came out in 2014. Last year Smith released “How Do You Sleep?,” as well as teaming up with Disclosure for a cover of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love" and Normani on "Dancing With A Stranger."
