Hear Liza Anne’s sunny and chaotic “Desire”

Rising indie rock musician Liza Anne beefed up her finely-wrought folk sound with 2018’s Fine But Dying, an alternately fraught and peppy album of emotionally nuanced pop tracks. Her new single, “Desire,” pushes her sound even further, embracing a sunny, loosely woven sound that feels indebted to contemporaries like Julia Jacklin and Better Oblivion Community Center. A wry and chaotic song about resisting temptation, “Desire” — premiering above — finds Liza trying to analyze all the careless decisions she’s made. “I think I’ve kissed too many of my friends to make a sober decision,” the song begins, before unravelling completely: “Oh no, I really want it, oh God, I really need to calm down,” she sings during the track’s peak. It’s a painfully familiar sentiment.

“This song is the feeling of having too much of a good thing,” Liza tells The FADER via email. “It is a reckoning with the responsibility that comes with interacting with people through a period of your own unhealth paired with the hope that you can handle yourself better in your future tomorrows.”
