Watch Pink Siifu’s beautifully chaotic video for “SMD”
The L.A. based artist releases the first video from his new album NEGRO.
Last week, L.A. based artist Pink Siifu pleasantly surprised his longtime listeners when he dropped NEGRO, his new album which trades in his typically soulful, introspective raps for highly charged punk with some traces of free jazz. In an essay written on a website especially made for the album, Siifu shared that the source of NEGRO's rage comes from the constant threat of death that Black people face in the U.S., whether that be at the hands of police or by the larger society at some capacity. One of the album's standouts is "SMD," a short burst of energy that sees Siifu denouncing abusive law enforcement while ensuring Black people that they will persevere. Today on The FADER we're premiering the song's video (directed by Dylan Mcgale with assistant camera work by Neema Sadeghi) which perfectly matches the track's chaotic energy.
"Eye made 'SMD' off tha strength of anger and being mad at hella shit. Jeremiah Jae one of my fav producers, rappers, just artists period and he said he had sum punk shit, so he sent me like 2 eye think or maybe just this one at tha tyme and eye did this low key immediately prolly cuz of errthang going on," Siifu said in an email. "Eye was just mad lol. Mad at White folks at my job and my landlord, tha police errthang fr. A tyme prolly back in 16-17 and was initially tha intro on tha demo. This song really make me feel like yo whole world just shook into a chaos but also a reality some know well, maybe more than others. Shit remind me of tha skin I’m in, tha power, tha anger, tha beauty, and tha confidence in my living and defending tht right." Watch the video above.
