Listen to a previously unreleased version of Prince’s classic “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man”
The new rendition, recorded in 1979, will appear on the upcoming remastered edition of Prince’s Sign o’ the Times.
On September 25, Prince's estate will release a "Super Deluxe Edition" of Sign o' the Times, the 1987 album widely regarded to be Prince's masterpiece. The new re-release will include a new two-hour concert film and over 60 new tracks, including a previously unreleased version of "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man," recorded in 1979 at Hollywood Sound Recorders.
If you're familiar with Prince's career, you'll recognize the relatively stripped-down sound of Prince's early days, circa self-titled — "I Could Never" was actually recorded for that project, according to a press release. That context will make you appreciate the changes he made to the song's final version, adding the details and expansiveness that make it one of his best-loved songs. Have a listen below. Sign o' the Times Super Deluxe Edition is out September 25.
