Dominican songstress YENDRY drops video for “Se Acabó,” shares mini-documentary
En El Patio details the singer’s life growing up between Italy and the Dominican Republic.
Dominican-born songstress YENDRY is a trilingual, culture-connecting tour de force. Her wide-ranging musical influences, from 90's R&B to electronica to Bachata, come thanks to a childhood spent in both Europe and the Caribbean. On Friday, she shared the visuals for her latest single “Se Acabó" alongside Mozart La Para, a pulsing, piano-heavy banger that sees the singer lamenting the end of a failed relationship.
“I wrote it when everything was still apparently fine, but my subconscious was already sending me signs that something was breaking inside me," YENDRY said of the song's inspiration in a press release. "There is always a period of time when both people in a relationship try to text and fix things and still hang out together, but most of the time it’s just an illusion. When love ends, it’s almost impossible to revive it."
In addition to the track, YENDRY has shared an intimate mini-documentary detailing her upbringing growing up between the Dominican Republic and Italy with her mother, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of “Se Acabó.” YENDRY spoke to FADER about some of these early experiences via email.
"Growing up between two cultures, I would say I'm open in my approach when it comes to making music and I'm constantly influenced by what I listened to in my childhood - from old Bachata's melodies to Latin rhythms and contemporary European electronic music," she explained. "I would love to show young people that having two different cultures is an honor. I faced problems with self-acceptance in my adolescence by growing up in a different environment trying to constantly fit into one culture, whether it was with my Dominican family or with my Italian one, but there is nothing wrong with being different. This is the message I want to champion."
