Lil Yachty returns to rap with “Strike (Holster)”
The new single is his first since his psych-rock heel turn on the 2023 album Let’s Start Here..
In January, Lil Yachty shared a new album called Let's Start Here., a psychedelic rock album that saw the mumble rap pioneer pick up threads of Pink Floyd and Yves Tumor. “Fuck any of the albums I dropped before this one,” Yachty told Billboard in an interview that stoked controversy for his insistence that he released Let's Start Here. for "respect," a statement some took as a dismissal of hip-hop's credibility as an art form (he later denied this).
There have been signs, however, that Yachty has not left rap behind entirely. In March he tweeted his verse on the 2022 track “Set It Off Freestyle" with DC2Trill, writing: “I be quiet… but seriously I don’t think u n***** can fuck wit me when it comes to this rap shit.” Today (April 7), Yachty shares the full version of "Strike (Holster)," a highly-requested snippet since it first emerged last year. It's a pleasant return to his melodic rap sound with space-age synths and Yachty's iconic warble laced throughout. Listen below.
