Rap Blog: Amindi and Vayda know their worth
“cult classic” finds the LA singer and ATL rapper brushing off every distraction.
Rap Blog is a weekly showcase of a standout rap song.
Amindi released her latest mixtape Take What You Need back in late September, a freewheeling collection of loosies that always found a slick groove no matter if the Los Angeles singer was feeling lovelorn or lovestruck. She’s back today with a deluxe edition adding five new tracks including “cult classic," a foggy little bop featuring Atlanta up-and-comer Vayda about being too good for petty gossip and desperate men.
Amindi’s vocals are filtered and stacked deliciously, as if her breathy whisper is being haunted by a pitched-up poltergeist. Her easygoing flow, surging and ebbing, matches the nonchalance with which the struggles of yesteryear are effaced. “My results magic / I’m a cult classic,” she smiles beatifically.
By contrast, Vayda slides in breathless and fluid, syllables splashing across every bit of open space: “Please don’t ‘vite me to your section / you don’t got no bottles or no bitches, not a good impression/ If I let you know how I feel, I might sound too condescending.” And that’s just how she starts her verse. It really puts Amindi’s hook (ditching a guy by faking a studio session) into perspective — sometimes the truth hurts!
