There's little that stands between Mark Borthwick's family snapshots and the fashion photography for which he's become famous. His new book Not in Fashion (Rizzoli) has a personal scrapbook feel to it, not just because there's handwritten scribblings, newspaper cuttings and poetry, but also because all of images have an inherently intimate quality about them—whether it's a soft flash of Jane Birkin's eyes in a rearview mirror, Chloe Sevigny playing dress-up on Brighton Beach or just a group of Borthwick's friends larking around in his backyard. A celebration and book-signing happens this Thursday evening at The Journal Gallery in Brooklyn.
