Thrintage: AmVets

June 04, 2009

Every other Thursday, FADER style contributor Bethany Cosentino crosses boroughs, counties and states to find us fine thrifted and vintage pieces on the cheap for her column, Thrintage. This week in Azusa, CA she checked out AmVets. Read her thoughts and peep the steals after the jump.

You know how the mall gets super packed right before Christmas? The parking garage is filled with honking horns and drivers creep along hoping to snag others parking spots. Then when you get inside you have to weave in and out of people avoiding slow-walkers. This is basically how the AmVets Thrift Store in Azusa, California is all the time. It’s kind of a panic attack waiting to happen. Even though AmVets is one of the more stressful shopping ventures I’ve had to endure in a while, I can not emphasize enough that it was one of the best thrifting trips I’ve had to date! Yes, every “excuse me” I said was ignored and people constantly block the isle but it stopped bothering me after ten minutes when I spotted some of the best thrift store finds I’ve had in a while.

AmVets is definitely the biggest thrift store I’ve ever been to, and it’s seriously filled to capacity with some of the raddest stuff. The first thing I found was a giant vintage plaid bag. Next I made my way to the dresses and found three awesome pieces: two over-sized baby dolls and one form fitting floral dress that only cost 95 cents. On my way to the skirts I found a pair of floral tights draped over the side of an empty shopping cart, so I snatched those up. I put together three awesome summer outfits from tops and skirts I found. The first, a high waisted white skirt paired with a green and yellow flannel. The second, a white tank with mesh overlay and a Southwestern print skirt. And lastly a high wasited black sailor-style skirt paired with a white bustier. In the men's shirt section I found an oversized grey t-shirt with a wolf and dream catcher on the front. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I found three pairs of wooden clogs, all in my size, and all in amazing condition. Each pair was only $2.95, which is a crazy deal because clogs are mad expensive when purchased new! I was shocked when my total was under thirty bucks, but then again the prices are what make AmVets the department store of thrift stores. With just a mild sedative, some deep breathing and a little cash flow, AmVets won’t disappoint.
