When we put David Byrne on the cover of our last icon issue, it was because we thought he best represented the ethos of music at the time: borderless, genreless and willing to experiment in every direction possible. What we weren't expecting was Kindness. "Swinging Party" stands very firmly in the Talking Heads school of endearingly awkward white guy funk, but more modern. Jittery guitar is replaced by warm burbling textures and some lyrics about a bringing a lampshade to a party, because, you know, that implies you're drunk and raging. Never has making dubious decisions sounded so comforting.
