As soon as Drake dropped "Over," it was pretty much inevitable that just about every up-and-coming rapper would hop on the beat and send us emails with the subjects line DRAKE F. ME, "OVER" REMIX (UNSIGNED NEXT SHIT!). Then it would turn out to just be some random dude basically paraphrasing what Drake already did, but in a less exciting way. One guy we never expected to take a crack at the song, though, was Homebwoi, who we profiled in FADER #59. Homebwoi's always worked best as a living, breathing reflection of pop culture. He's had a weird career: he was Mr. Collipark's dude before releasing an awesome mixtape that was mostly overlooked. Then he skipped all the common rap pratfalls (i.e. being blocked from releasing an album when anyone might actually care), and licensed his songs for video games and even a WWE opening theme. We say all this to highlight the fact that Homebwoi could be extra jaded about music and easily spend much of his time on industry rants that alienate his entire audience, but he seems so much more good-natured than that. On "Over," he's criticizing other rappers, but having fun with it: It seems like everywhere we go, niggas saying homie spit that street shit (spits) street shit. You satisfied?. It's a light track, even if dude is legitimately mad about being overlooked, but it's also why Homebwoi is fun to listen to. He's right there with us, absorbing everything and trying to wrap his mind around it with a little bit of humor.
