If menswear's recent obsession with heritage brands is having one very palpable side effect, it's that designers are becoming increasingly interested in function. Brands of late have been appreciating the fabrics and technologies that used to go into making durable clothes. So while Aether Apparel's latest jackets don't exactly look like the Americana we've been seeing everywhere, they're the toughest winterwear around, simple and unbulky but really, really warm and waterproof. And J.Crew gets the importance of function, too: After September 1, they'll be stocking these Aether jackets in select stores right next to all their flannels and khakis.
