The basic meat of what we learned from the awesome compilation Roots of Chicha: the Peruvian Amazon was fucking STONY in the '60s and '70s. The comp unearthed cumbia's foray into the trippy netherworlds of what was termed chicha, with the illest dudes living in boomtowns dabbling in electronics and surf. Now Barbes Records is delving even further into the treasure chest with the aptly titled Roots of Chicha 2: Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru (out October 12), this time focusing on the special way musicians in cities like Lima got down. For Manzanita y su Conjunto, specifically, the steez was wild rhythmic skill, super-tight guitar noodles, ghoulish chanting and being overarchingly based. Super far out, part dos.
