The Cell Phone as Global Music Source: Dutty Artz and Sahelsounds’ Transatlantic Transfer

October 20, 2010

As noted recently in Ghetto Palms, Sahelsounds' Music from Saharan Cellphones (FADER contributor and constant globetrotter Jace Clayton quickly picked up on it, and, maybe coincidentally maybe not, his label Dutty Artz just sent over a promo for their new compilation titled New York Tropical that is a file of every song from it chopped down into ringtones ready for your mobile device of choice. So theoretically, anyone, possibly Kirkley, could put these jams on his or her phone, fly to West Africa or some other random place, dump the phone and have it discovered by a local, shared with whoever and then five years from now rediscovered by a blogger. Confusing. But the music's good so it doesn't really matter. Pick up the New York Tropical Tonez here now and pick up the non-phone version on November 2nd. Tracklist after the jump.
