Remember when Washed Out first came out, he was like, Aw man I just like hanging out with my wife in an orange field and maybe making music in my room when I feel like it. After that, we all pretty much declared him the forefront of an entire musical movement, and he disappeared probably because—Whoa, holy shit!—that's heavy. Now he's back with Within and Without, his first full length ever. Most of it is pretty low key, a bunch of barely-there songs that are infectious and warm or just background jams—neither necessarily a bad place to be depending on where your mind is when you're listening. "Eyes be Closed" is the first single, it's nice, but honestly, it's missing the sense of uninhibited joy of his earlier stuff. Let's chalk it up to pressure from the outside world until we start listening to it constantly without realizing it, which is completely possible.
