It's hard to know how to precisely credit Labyrinth Ear for their subtle but effective handling of one of Arthur Russell's greatest songs. The New Cross, London duo built right on top of the original, preserving Russell's voice and his still-biting cello while adding a sharper beat, haunting backup vocalist and a number of little production flourishes. But the craziest part is when Russell—who would have been 60 this week—does the Fever Ray voice at 2:15. It was there all along, but when you start thinking of this track as a new product of 2011, hear it in a modern production context, his nearly two decade-old decisions are only proven more revolutionary.
