Every week a different FADER staff member will pick a clothing item or accessory that he or she has lately been spending a lot of time with—or would like to—and write a little love letter to it. We would’ve done a column on who we’re dating but that seemed a little bit much. This week Deidre talks about her MadeMe x Schott Perfecto Motorcycle Jacket.
I have a hard time being mean to people. Even though life has done a fairly decent job of toughening up this sweet and sensitive Pisces, I'm still very polite and way too nice to people that don't deserve it. Lately, though, there's been a shift in my demeanor. I took a trip for my birthday last month and maybe it was seeing two grown women literally come to blows for overhead compartment space on the flight to Europe that made me realize I need to speak up for what I want in life and quit taking bullshit (as well as never let a stranger so much as touch my carry-on luggage). Or maybe it's been, more generally, just the handful of friends that have let me down recently, behaving in less than stellar ways. This is not a pity party though—I love gleaning lessons from shitty relationships and incidents of public brawling. I believe that they will make me stronger, wiser and heighten my emotional and physical reflexes. Don't get me wrong, I haven't become a total bad ass, but I did curse out a random stranger at a party last week because I didn't like the way he said "Excuse me." It's a learning process, okay?
It seems the universe knew what hard-boiled lessons were coming down the pipeline for me, and as a reward for due diligence, it sent me this amazing leather jacket. Designer Erin Magee from MadeMe has assembled the perfect components for an awesome piece of outwear. A classic Schott motorcycle jacket that's been cropped and lined in a cloyingly sweet Liberty of London floral print. It screams "Don't fuck with me" on the outside and "I really am nice person" on the inside—all the things I've been too scared to say all along.
