New Memory in July, Portland's Malcom Lacey, recording as
Arrange, will have turned in six albums in two years. Routing his affectingly shaky voice through strong drone work and buried piano playing, Lacey's growing discography reads like a thick account of the fragility of late teenage years. It's a vulnerable perspective, and it's often a pretty massive bummer, really, but he almost always nails the sound. Plus, consistent bleakness means the bright parts are even more pointed, like on his latest single, "Caves," with hints of sunrise keys and a surprisingly poppy chorus, when the sounds can peek out from under the covers.
