There's this weird lightness to Mac DeMarco’s music. The songs feel fragile, like they're slipping away from DeMarco even as he's singing them. The effect isn't unlike hearing a song late night on the radio while half asleep. On "Ode to Viceroy," one of the many standouts from DeMarco's 2, which is out October 16th on Captured Tracks, his vocals are laconic and his guitarwork bubbles naturally, so when it starts cascading dreamily toward the end, it feels like the most organic place he could have taken the track. In fact, much of 2 works this way. His songs play out exactly as you imagine they should, like forgotten classics you only kind of remember hearing.
