Every week, a different FADER editor compiles a playlist to highlight a new release and give you a guide to that artist’s web of influences and peers. These Staff Selects live in our Spotify app, alongside GEN Fs from our archives and playlists for each issue. Today, it’s Duncan Cooper on a newly announced album by Mark Kozelek and Jimmy LaValle.
Mark Kozelek, the singer/songwriter behind Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters, and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle, best known as The Album Leaf/the guy who made that song they always play on This American Life, will release a collaborative album next April on Kozelek's label, Caldo Verde. Entitled Perils From the Sea, and credited "Sun Kil Moon and The Album Leaf" even though "Sun Kil Leaf" would've been funnier, it will be one of three already-announced 2013 LPs by Kozelek, including a live album and a covers album featuring interpretations of Sonny and Cher, Misfits and Big Star. In anticipation, and to relive my scruffy, depressed, post-rock-laden college-paper-writing years, I've smashed together some of the best (and bleakest) tracks from the two artists, along with some by groups in their orbit—Sun Kil Moon drummer Tim Mooney's other band American Music Club; Sigur Ros, whose members played on a number of Album Leaf LPs; LaValle's old band Tristeza and his early tour mates The American Analog Set.
