Deniro Farrar's new album The Patriarch is both a dark, lonely record and a comprehensive survey of the sort of post-Clams Casino producers that spend as much time listening to ambient jams as they do DJ Screw. There's a lot to take in here: Friendzone’s "Back/Forth/Back" sees Farrar's hoarse voice take on new edge over choppy twinkle, while Different Sleep’s "Kill Your Idol" is basically interstellar snap music. Farrar is becoming an expert at writing to a diverse (but always dark) selection of beats, relentlessly pushing vintage reality rap onto a completely new audience.
