"Marvins Room" is far and away the prettiest you'll ever hear Drake, courtesy of NEXT Collective, an ensemble of young jazz stars including saxophonists Logan Richardson and Walter Smith III, guitarist Matt Stevens and Jamire Williams, an out-of-the-box drummer who cuts his cymbals into dangling spirals. The real star here, though, is special guest Christian aTunde Adjuah, the fantastic trumpeter featured in our last issue, whose muted playing matches one of Drake's most emotional performances and multiplies it by nine. NEXT Collective's Cover Art LP, which also features jazz renditions of songs by Little Dragon, Bon Iver, and Jay-Z and Kanye West, is out now via Concord Jazz. This Saturday, aTunde Adjuah plays a special birthday show in Harlem at Ginny's Supper Club.
