FADER PREMIERE
Tinashe is a 20-year-old LA via Kentucky singer with Aaliyah-swoop bangs. She started her career in a Justin Bieber tour-opening girl group and did some movies; now, she has a solo deal with RCA. She's capping off 2013 with a new mixtape, Black Water, her first proper release of the year following 2012 tapes Reverie and In Case We Die, and a handful of recent loose singles, like Jacques Greene-produced "Painted Faces" and "One For Me" (on this tape, re-christened "1 For Me") with Ryan Hemsworth. Dotted with voiceover interludes, Black Water is a '90's R&B-honoring, laptop glow-lit collection of sweet-and-sour torch songs that showcase Tinashe's breathy angel vocals. Pay close attention to lead single "Vulnerable," featuring current FADER cover star Travi$ Scott, and grinning cool-out jam "Just A Taste."
