When speaking about his experience taking pictures of Ratking for our latest issue's cover story, photographer Harry Gould Harvey IV said New York is "pretty, but without forcibly being pretty." I thought of that sentiment the other day when I randomly got turned around in Lower Manhattan and ended up walking blissfully in the wrong direction for 20 minutes, and I thought of it again just now, when I watched the new Porches. video. Porches. is the experimental rock project of songwriter Aaron Maine, and "Leather" is a tepid, deflated pop song that features backing vocals from his real-life sweetie and bandmate Greta Kline, bka Frankie Cosmos, who is a prolific songwriter in her own right. The VHS-quality official clip follows Maine and Kline as they float aimlessly around downtown NYC and beyond, soaking up that unflashy, bleak-but-beautiful charm that Harvey was talking about.
