Parquet Courts new record, Sunbathing Animal, is shaping up to be one of the essential rock records of the summer, and the seven-plus minute "Instant Dissasembly" is a definite standout. With its oft-repeated earworm guitar lick, it channels the muggy restlessness of a New York summer night, when even after downing a bunch of beers there are still a million thoughts racing through your sweaty head. It's a slow song for them, almost like a ballad or something, and the shrewd-as-ever lyrics are low-key devastating (I keep repeating myself/ there's nothing left to dismantle of the house that just collapsed on itself). Sunbathing Animal is out June 3rd via What's Your Rupture?/Mom+Pop; read bassist Sean Yeaton's reading recommendations from our What We're Reading column right here.
