Houston, one of Drizzy’s 50 adopted hometowns, has declared June 10 as “Drake Day.” Mayor Annise D. Parker made the news official at a ceremony Friday, thanking the “Draft Day” rapper for his “passion and enthusiasm for music and our city.” Drake is currently in H-Town for “Houston Appreciation Weekend,” a four-day celebration curated by October’s Very Own. After appearing at a Houston Astros game Thursday, Drake will play the Warehouse Live venue Friday before hosting a series of after-parties.
Drizzy’s love affair with Houston dates back to his 2008 mixtape So Far Gone, which featured the song “Houstatlantavegas,” a DJ Screw sample on “November 18th,” a Bun B collaboration on “Uptown” and shoutouts to local legends UGK, Big Moe and Lil Keke. On his most recent LP Nothing Was The Same, Drake continued to honor Houston hip-hop on his syrupy downtempo “Connect” with an interpolation of DJ DMD’s “25 Lighters.”
How does one celebrate “Drake Day?” It probably looks something like this.
