The expression "one man’s trash is another man’s treasure" feels especially apt in the case of Grimes’ rejected Rihanna track “Go,” which arrives today via 4AD and features "Phone Sex" collaborator Blood Diamonds. Grimes performed the track at the Governor’s Ball in June, but she debuted the recorded version today on Zane Lowe's show on Radio 1 in the UK.
When the Montreal musician's Visions came out in 2012, her circular throbbing arrangements were not only immediately accessible, but transcendentally and singularly jaw-dropping. Her eerie and largely unintelligible voice over subtly Satanic beats became a signature. But “Go” doesn’t stem from the comfortable niche Claire Boucher carved out for herself; the track begins with a vampiric harpsichord, introduces her emo vocals (which have never been clearer or stronger), then gnarls into an punishing dubstep climax unlike anything she’s ever done before. It’s Grimes’ first real club-ready work, but only for the kind of club where black-clad phantoms oscillate in a secret underground dungeon.
"Go" is expected to be on the Grimes' as-yet-untitled, upcoming album, but Boucher wanted it out as soon as possible: "It’s our summer jam so we figured we should put it out cuz I am very bored of waiting to finish my album b4 releasing new music haha," she said in the press release for the track.
