FADER PREMIERE
Multi-genre South African musician Spoek Mathambo has made a mix inspired by fellow SA producer DJ Spoko to coincide with a forthcoming documentary about the South African music scene called Future Sound of Mzansi. The film surveys the contrast of the political state of the country with the burst of creative innovation in the music scene. “We’re still a country steeped in poverty, crime and injustice—but we party like our lives depend on it,” the film's trailer says (watch it below), and that potent cultural energy and sense of chaos seems to be the element that infuses DJ Spoko’s music with so much passion. "As part of a series of Future Sound of Mzansi promo mixes, I've done this mix of Spoko tracks, showing his wide range of styles including pitori house, shangaan electro, and the raw sound of Bacardi House, the genre he invented that now rules over the clubs of Atteridgeville," writes Mathambo. Listen to the energetic mix below and catch DJ Spoko at Warm Up at MoMA PS1 this Saturday.
