One of my favorite underground pop songs of the past couple of years—songs you just know would make the big time if they had a major's big bucks backing—is Outer Limitz' "I Kontact," an obscenely catchy summer jam that pivots on the thrill of lusty glances in the street. It's the work of ex-Test Icicles' Sam Mehran and shares a fuzzy-edged groove that his former bandmate Dev Hynes knows all about too. I mention Mehran because he's one of the producers working with new Brooklyn singer Katie Rush along with Gunk TV Records' Zak Mering. The '80s-drenched "Law of Attraction" is both Rush's first single and the title track of her debut EP out now, and it's the kind of thing that the Breakfast Club kids would be mooning about to in a reflective montage scene given half the chance.
