Thom Yorke Announces New Solo Album, Buy It Now on BitTorrent
The Radiohead singer announced that his upcoming record, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, will be distributed using a new version of BitTorrent.
Earlier this week, we reported on a photo that showed a mysterious white vinyl album in which Radiohead singer Thom Yorke and band producer Nigel Godrich shared on social media. The enigmatic image raised questions on whether it was a sign of a new record from either Radiohead, Yorke, or Atoms for Peace. Now Yorke and Godrich have announced a new Yorke album titled Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes which you can buy now via a new version of BitTorrent. (Check out the video for "A Brain in a Bottle" above). The pair had this to say in a press release:
It’s an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around ...
If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work.
Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves.
Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers.
If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.
Certainly, Yorke is no stranger when it comes to going against the traditional practices of the music industry. Fans will remember Radiohead’s pay-what-you-wish download option for the band’s 2007 album In Rainbows, and the creation of its own digital record shop. Regardless of this latest method, the bottom line is that we now have a new album from Yorke, the first since 2006's The Eraser. Hallelujah!
