Nick Murphy, the Australian artist who releases electronic music as Chet Faker, once told Interview he was heavily influenced by the iconic, Motown-stuffed The Big Chill soundtrack. The Melbourne-based artist made us an exclusive FADER Mix that shows off his own personal curatorial skills. Moving between genres and eras—fresh-faced rap from Goldlink, classic singing from Donny Hathaway, a Les Sins track—the set is a nice supplement to Faker's soulful, genre-blurring aesthetic, but it's also a fun half hour of music in its own right. Grab the FADER Mix below, and catch Chet Faker at Italy's Club to Club festival this Wednesday, November 5th.
Where are you right now? Mid-air, LA to NYC. Cramped.
How does the Australian take on electronic music differ to that of the UK or the US? I can't speak for UK or US, but my hometown Melbourne has a strong techno/deep house scene. Warehouses are a bit of a thing back home so I spent a lot of time at "warehouse parties" on the weekends that would usually start with some sort of live act and end with real DJs. So there is a respect for the full spectrum of electronic music: from the live end, to the fine art of selecting.
What, musically, shapes your approach to your own work? I like playing actual instruments. I find it hard to work just on a laptop, although that's something I'm having to get used to. I like working into a physical groove with the music. If it's not in some kind of pocket for me I lose interest and the music never gets finished.
What do you have coming up over the next few months? Touring and more touring.
What's the last book you read that had a big impact on you?I just read Daniel Khaneman's Thinking Fast and Slow. A lot of great insight into how easily swayed we are by the small things.
What's your favorite dish to cook and how do you make it? Japanese take away.
