A new trailer for Dope hit the web yesterday. The comedy, which was well-received when it played at Sundance, features a number of rappers: both A$AP Rocky and Vince Staples have acting roles, and the project is executive-produced by Pharrell. Rocky apparently got interested in the movie when he was helping his ex-girlfriend, Chanel Imam, who also appears in the film, prepare for her lines. He then recorded videos of himself and sent them to the director, Rick Famuyiwa, who gave him a chance to audition. Rocky told New York Times Magazine, “If I’m starring in a movie, I just want people to understand that I’m not a celebrity trying to use his status to finagle his way into Hollywood, you know? I really want to start from the bottom.”
Dope hits theaters June 19.
